Ponyo

I keep forgetting that Ponyo will be opening in English on August 14. I wasn’t sure about going (it’s not the most exciting or coherent movie I’ve ever seen) but I think I’m leaning towards it now that I’ve seen the English trailer. (Oddly enough, the only anime I seem to prefer dubbed are Ghibli films.)
Half my problem is the complete lack of excitement over most of the movies released this summer. I’ve only really loved 3 so far (UP, Star Trek and Harry Potter) so my enthusiasm has waned with each new let down. I supposed I shouldn’t punish Ponyo for everyone else’s mistakes. :)
But! I do feel that it’s important to support films like this in the theater. Movie studios love looking at profit and if crappy movies get sequels based on the box office, then I think it’s important that ones like Ponyo get my $11-13.
Plus, Leam Neeson is in it. Gotta love that.

I have to say, though, that the preview doesn’t really reflect what the movie is really like. It’s not quite the edge of your seat thrill ride an average person might expect from the whole “save the world!” thing…

From what I heard it’s a retelling of “Little mermaid” – from the trailer, I’m thinking it’s more along the line of “my neighbor totoro”

Have no idea who they are – from wiki, another boy band, but Disney always seem to do that – maybe they appear on Disney channer? Shrug, I usually watch anime with subs, except for Howl – Christian Bale! and a very few exceptions (mostly Ghibli)

Yeah, that’s pretty much it in a nutshell. But it’s just a wee bit boring….
I think Howl’s Moving Castle is the only Ghibli film I *don’* own. I absolutely love the book and I was so disappointed in the adaptation. I might have liked it more if I hadn’t read the book, I think.

That’s my favorite book and reread many time – it was the only book I brought on airplane – so I could just flip to any page and reread many times :)
yeah, at one point the anime is totally different from the book – to me it’s like a fanfic of the book so I don’t mind the difference as much. I mean, the Witch of the Waste didn’t have to be that hideous – she’s supposed to be beautiful, and war and Prince Justin – it’s pretty lame, I think. But Sophie is still awesome :)

oh? that’s pretty disappointing … Another Ghibli anime that I’m looking forward to is “Tales from Earthsea” which is supposed to be released in the US July 2010 due to some copyright issue. It was already released in Europe and Australia in 2007.

I’m glad you liked it! I haven’t had a chance to see it yet – went to District 9 on the weekend instead. I’m also having to work past the Jonas brother/wee Cyrus thing a bit. I’ll get over it. :)
