My new “to buy” list

February 6, 2009 at 5:04 pm 8 comments

Last night I finally got around to refilling my much depleted wish list at Amazon.ca.  I like to occasionally go through my manga list to check authors and titles to see what is coming out when. It makes it so much easier to look forward to things!

(Side note: in doing author searches I kept coming across unfamiliar titles by people I like… but in French! Ah, if only I had cared enough after high school to keep up my language skills. The manga I could now read!)

I’ve been trying to be a little more selective in what I’ve bought lately. Moving twice in one year means that not only are you watching your money for a while, but you’re also left wondering why you have so much damn stuff. I’ve been slowly switching some titles to read only, which is a lot easier since I work at the bookstore twice a week.

That process led to a slightly socially awkward conversation. The owner of my usual comic store asked me last week about the kind of deal I get on books at the bookstore and if we were still getting manga titles early. Oops! I buy a lot of my Shojo Beat manga at the bookstore now. I can buy them on the Saturday before they arrive at comic shops and I like having them to read on my only day off. In a typical twist, publishers have finally started lowering the cover prices on new manga just as the Canadian/US exchange rate went crazy. So the comic shops that got to drop their prices to US cover (because the exchange rate was almost at par) now suddenly have to raise them back up again. If I didn’t have the bookstore discount I would get better deals at the comic stores, but the drop in cover price combined with my staff discount is too much of a temptation to pass up.

So… titles from the list I’ve decided to stop buying:

B.O.D.Y. – fairly standard shojo that I probably will never reread. If I want to later, I’ll buy more volumes then.
Bleach – volume 25 of Bleach tipped me over the edge. I had to read (another) volume of Ichigo training (again). I still love the art but the story swerves waaay too much between boring/training and “something is finally happening!” I’m just going to buy the volumes that I enjoy after this.
Fushigi Yûgi: Genbu Kaiden – this one is coming out far too slowly for me. I had trouble remembering/caring what happened previously so I decided to stop buying it.
La Corda d’Oro – a title I was buying just to read.
Love Attack – a Tokyopop title that I would be buying (along with Missile Happy) if not for the boycott.
Love Com – I’ll probably go back and buy this series later (or if I find it on sale) but for now I’m happy just to read it.
Phantom Dream – a Tokyopop title! Though if it’s good I’ll buy it once the series is done. I did really like the first volume.
S.A. – not a reread kind of title for me…
School Rumble – amusing, but I found myself losing interest as the volume numbers rose.
Tsubasa: Those with Wings – Tokyopop! Again, if it’s good I’ll buy it later.
Vampire Knight – I don’t get why this one is so crazy popular.
Wild Ones – this one I kept buying after I stopped Vampire Knight, Genbu Kaiden and Love Com. I might go back to buying it if it ends soon.

I was kind of disappointed that Wild Adaptor and Saiyuki Reload don’t have new volumes listed yet!

My wish list (copy and pasted from Amazon.ca) not including the random new titles I’ll be buying if they catch my eye:

    I wish I worked at a bookstore :)
I came on “Nana” board recently since I like “Paradise kiss” – there are 2 other series of hers in French version “I’m not an angel” and “the neighborhood” (or something like that) …
Otomen 1 is very fun. I seem to get a lot of Viz books especially the first week of the month!

Oh, are they available in French? I have a friend who loves her other anime series… I should see if I can get her the French volumes for her next birthday!

I wanted the series by the Kodocha manga-ka. I loved Kodocha…

The bookstore is cool because we get to borrow books. That means at least two extra manga reads a week! :) I have Kasumi 1 signed out right now that I have to read before going in to work tomorrow…

It’s called “Honey Bitter.” I *ahem* found it elsewhere, but I would totally buy it if I could!

    And thanks for the links!

“Honey Bitter” is kinda cute – but the characters’ looks a bit like “Love*com” – I’ll probably pick these up. Too bad amazon.ca doesn’t seem to have it.

Dammit I meant “your”, not “you’re”. I’ve committed one of my own pet peeves! I blame it on the fact I’m watching Food Network right now.
