That’s so wrong…

Thanks to a post at the Newsarama blog I finally learned a little about the Demashitaa! Powerpuff Girls Z series,which is a Japanese remake of the North American original.  I’d been avoiding looking at it when visiting Fansub TV… I’m not quite sure why.  Perhaps I found the concept a little freaky and was reluctant to see what happened to the Powerpuff Girls when viewed through an anime filter.  :P  Now I know, more or less.  They’re magical girls who transform, instead of 24/7 superheroes, and in true secret identity tradition no one seems to notice the huge, bejeweled belts with the big-ass “P” they all wear.

So here’s a demo of their various transformations, courtesy of You Tube.  (Ah, You Tube.  You waste my time so delightfully.) Blossom and Bubbles are insanely perky and obviously delighted to be transforming (although oddly startled at times), and Buttercup seems to be channeling some sort of inner angry rebel.  Still, nothing can beat the rage of the original Buttercup, who would probably cause severe bodily harm to anyone who suggested she magically transform her clothes while dancing.  heh.  I loved Buttercup.

I ended up watching a few minutes of the series, and it pretty much justified my earlier plan to avoid it altogether.  I think if I want a Powerpuff Girls fix I’ll dig out my copy of the movie…. or not, since I just remembered I lent it to someone a couple of years ago and don’t think I got it back….  This is why people tell me I should charge overdue fines when I lend out my stuff.  :)

Entry filed under: anime.

Manga and Ramen… together?? Lucky! 2007 calendars already?

    I liked the original Powerpuff Girls too. But I never saw the movie :\ I saw this available on AnimeSuki but I was reluctant to check it out for the same reasons. I didn’t want to know how the Japanese twisted around another North American series to suit their audience, especially after I saw this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L9q69dPKWgI

    Yup! I think it’s called Leopardon. He uses it to fight the bigger monsters, apparently sent down by Rita Repulsa. SPIDER-MAN!

    That’s awesome. I would totally watch that, just for the cheese factor. I sent my nephew your You Tube link and he wanted to know why there was a Transformer in the credits… I explained the concept of gratuitous giant robots to him. :) (Tho shouldn’t the robot have some sort of spider-type name??)

    Um, I’m guessing there’s no Green Goblin character? Now HIS giant robot I’d love to see!

    I’m watching it because it’s PPG and I love them. =)

    I have Gameboy games, the movie, dolls, books… I even had shoes and a bathing suit, but the bathing suit’s torn and the shoes are long since too small.

    The last time I went to World’s Biggest Book Store, I bought PPG books. ^^;

    So is the Japanese version really that bad? :) I liked catching the show when it was on, but I can’t remember why I ended up buying the movie. I bought a lot more used dvds then, I guess. My PPG merch is limited to a hollow plastic Buttercup my friends got me for Christmas one year, because they knew she was my favorite (it’s the anger). I use it as a piggy bank.

    I have yet to watch it, just downloading the episodes. I’m waiting for the right moment to watch them.

    I bought the movie because it was PPG, and… It was in the cheapie bin with no case at Blockbuster. I remember going to see it in theatres with my grandma when she could still move.
