about

Sorry, haven’t had time to really think about this space yet. I guess I can start with a bit about me. I am:

- a library and information technician
- addicted to manga (tho not as much as a lot of other people, I tell myself)
- a lending ho (seriously, does anyone want to borrow any of my stuff??)
- a Robin fangirl (even though the writer on Robin right now is so bad I can’t even read that comic right now… grr!!) (now filled with hope that it gets better after OYL)
- an aunt to two awesome nephews, one of whom is always open to being pelted with new anime to watch (the other is just way too young yet… but soon, very soon. Mwah ha ha ha)
- a compulsive reader who is going through a book slump right now. The book slump may be over. I’m keeping my fingers crossed and asking friends for recommendations. :) And I only read genre fiction, not the kind of stuff Oprah wants me to read.
- a part time bookseller in the movie section of a bookstore
- frequently grumpy, although I try to work on that
- 34 years old.

(hmm. this page got assigned a knitting tag. weird. but yes, I also like to knit…)

Hi, browsed thru your entries after following the anime trail. And I must say I enjoy the way you present your views and lists. Yes, yes, it can’t all be about manga, but isn’t it frequently? ^^ (for me, it’s more a “it can’t be all about anime” thing). Hope this reply doesn’t freak you out as being a tad stalkerish, but having come from the blogger community (where you mostly get really … um… light reading if you do the random blog thing), it’s refreshing to come across your insights.

Hi! I’m never entirely sure about comment/linking etiquette either - I always feel like I’m being forward or something. I don’t think there’s a rule book yet. :) I love anime too, but with manga being cheaper (and more portable) it’s easier to spend time on it. I like to do little mini-marathons when I can. I have such a backlog of stuff hanging around that I have to watch though…

=D I think it’s awesome to know you live in my city and have so much manga! Plus, without you, I wouldn’t have know TPL had The Wallflower, Othello and Hellsing!

  • 4. pajcat  |  June 30, 2006 at

I’m glad my TPL list was useful! Toronto’s an awesome city for manga and such. And with Chinatown so easy to get to we even get imported toys and stuffed things. Plus, conventions! Although I don’t go to many of those….

  • 5. Ama  |  June 30, 2006 at

I’ve never been to Chinatown for anime stuff… I just go to Pacific Mall. That’s where I bought my FMA plushies. =)

  • 6. pajcat  |  June 30, 2006 at

Pacific Mall is good, but it takes me *forever* to get there! It’s about a 15 minute walk to Chinatown from work, but I try not to go very often. I always end up spending too much money. I’m collecting the Fruits Basket plush toys but my secret vice is key chains. I have WAY too many of them!

  • 7. Ama  |  July 1, 2006 at

I think it’s faster by car? My parents just drive me. I’m going sometime this weekend. I buy too many posters whenever I go. They’re only two bucks each! (Plus tax…)

  • 8. pajcat  |  July 2, 2006 at

I tend to get Asian movies when I go there, tho you can get the same ones in Chinatown. Right now I have a few movies based on anime/manga in my pile to watch. Um, the Initial D movie, Touch and Nana. I watched Kamikaze Girls again tonight (can’t remember if the novel, manga or movie came first) and it’s soooo funny!

I forgot to ask you if you had a lot of manga too?

  • 9. Ama  |  July 3, 2006 at

    I have almost 100 volumes of manga. ^^;

I don’t own any anime really, I’ve just bought a few anime movies.

  • 10. pajcat  |  July 3, 2006 at

Collecting manga is a much cheaper hobby than collecting anime. It’s getting cheaper, but it’s still pretty pricey.

  • 12. pajcat  |  July 21, 2006 at

Do you mean where are my pictures of the Hitachiin twins? Mostly in my episode recaps, I guess. :) All of my Ouran posts can be found by clicking on the Ouran category on my sidebar (or http://pajcat.wordpress.com/tag/ouran/). The pictures themselves don’t have urls but if you right click with your mouse on a picture you like you should be able to save them to your computer.

    Hi,

Sorry for the very late notice, but I have been searching for designers that may want to submit a pattern to be published in the accord pattern a day calendar for 2008 and I just found your website. I am working on the calendar now and it needs to go to the publisher on Monday. If you are interested in submitting a pattern, please send it directly to me in the next 1-2 days and I will get the pattern into the calendar.

Check out http://www.crochetpatternaday.com. There is no payment per submission, but you receive a copy of the final, printed calendar and there’s a monetary contest. Also, each pattern you submit will have a link to your website. Many of our designers, yarn shops and other contributors actually submit the free patterns that are on their website and list their URL to hopefully drive users to their website. It’s pretty decent advertising anyway.

    Thanks,
    Susan

Well, from the amount of time it took me to make neat piles of my new stuff last night, I’m glad I don’t have more. :)

According to one of the editors on the DMP forums, there are five OtRFK novels, but four and five are being serialized and not published as one volume yet. Or so I understood. :)

  • 16. moffattbooks  |  September 1, 2007 at

nice list, I have probably over 300 myself and a decent sized anime collection. That’s what happens when you’re single and live in your own apt. I also have over 1000 books, mostly differnet series, what kind of books do you like reading? Hope you keep collecting.

  • 17. kizo  |  September 23, 2007 at

Waah, hopefully this doesn’t sound creepy, but. do you have a picture of your manga library? ._.; i’ve seen that many in a personal collection.

  • 18. pajcat  |  September 23, 2007 at

Ha, well I probably will soon. It’s hard to tell how many I have, though, because I have them layered three deep on my shelves. My mom was shocked when she heard how many I had because she’d seen my shelves on visits and it really doesn’t look like much.

I’m getting ready to move tho, and am going to document the manga packing/unpacking in pictures, I think. Because I’m a geek. :)

My regular books (mostly sci/fi and fantasy) have already been packed. I’m afraid if I finish it all too soon I’m going to start taking things out of boxes when I run out of new stuff to read.

Hi, I’ve been exploring your site and it’s very interesting. On the list of manga you own, I’ve seen some I really like. Where do you buy your books? At the store you work at? Online? I’d appreciate the information. Thank you. =]

  • 20. pajcat  |  November 24, 2007 at

I buy my manga at a mix of places. Most are from the comic store I go to every week. Hairy Tarantula in Toronto. Comic stores tend to be cheaper than bookstores for buying manga.

A lot of the manga I buy at my bookstore is stuff that comes in before the comic stores get them (new releases always come out on Wednesday there) and a lot of times I’m too impatient to wait the extra five days to buy them. If I didn’t have such a nice employee discount I might not get so much there.

I tend to look at online stores as a last resort, or for things like yaoi, since the comic stores don’t always get everything or there are delays in shipping at the border because of the content. Online can be tricky, too, because you only get free shipping if you spend $40. A lot of times I end up buying something extra just so I’m not paying for shipping. (the theory being, if I’m going to pay $6 for shipping, I might as well spend an extra $4 and get a book.)

I see a lot of people buying manga in the bookstore I work at and it’s kind of annoying to me that I can’t always tell them they’d spend less at a comic book store. The managers frown on that sort of thing. :)

Does that help? I have a list of places in Toronto to buy manga on my site somewhere, but it doesn’t exactly help if you’re not from here. :)

  • 21. badtzphoto  |  December 17, 2007 at

I came here through Managa Maniac Cafe because of your intriguing title :)

” (the theory being, if I’m going to pay $6 for shipping, I might as well spend an extra $4 and get a book.)”
I have the same theory, too :)

I have a question regarding “Platinum Garden” which I saw on your list. How do you like it comparing to say “Hana-kimi” or “Fruits basket”? I’m kind of on the fence if I want to read book 2 and so on. There are things that I like and don’t like about book 1.

  • 22. pajcat  |  December 17, 2007 at

Exactly. Why buy three manga when you can buy four??

Ah, Platinum Garden… I think it doesn’t compare at all to Fruits Basket or Hana Kimi, both of which are among my favorite titles. I will say that I think it is good, but not great, I always like it more than I think I will, but have low expectations, and if I had to ration the amount of manga I was buying in a week I could leave it behind without any regret.

I also started buying it around the time that I started Dazzle and chose to stop collecting Dazzle instead of Platinum Garden. Does that help? :)

I think if I had to name some shojo-type titles that I loved as much as FB and HK, it would be: Land of the Blindfolded, Tramps Like Us, Gatcha Gacha and Skip Beat. Those are some of the books that share precious front-shelf real estate with the other two. :)

  • 23. badtzphoto  |  December 20, 2007 at

    Thanks for your reply :)

“Land of the Blindfolded, Tramps Like Us, Gatcha Gacha and Skip Beat.”
I was thinking of checking out “Skip beat” but it’s still going. I prefer mangas that are completed since I know the end is near ;)

I had to google “Dazzle” and it didn’t seem like my cup of tea. I guess I kind of still want to know where Platinum garden is heading. I’m supposed I’m in for self punishment of some sort. But the first book has some really funny moments. On the other hand, there are so many manga out there (baby and me, yotsuba&!, Emma …) why hang up with this one, you know?

  • 24. pajcat  |  December 20, 2007 at

Yeah, I think that there are enough supernatural romances out there that are a lot better than Platinum Garden, if you’re iffy about it.

And Yotsuba&! is one of my favorite books, and one that I can’t read in public. The laughing out loud thing is too embarrassing. :)

  • 25. Ryuuzaki Kusakurin  |  January 10, 2008 at

I know what you mean - there are some hilarious manga out there.

I’m also glad I’m not the only one who read Juvenile Orion…

If you ever want any fanfiction, just ask. My entire blog is fanfiction. Lots of fun.

  • 26. badtzphoto  |  February 6, 2008 at

Hi, I’m back to say that I’ve checked out “Skip beat” and now I am hooked. What a fun series. However, I suspect this is for a long haul (as in at least another 10 books - given that it’s 18 in Japanese and Ren and Kyoko haven’t gone anywhere!)

  • 27. Domino  |  June 23, 2008 at

Great blog, I love all the anime/manga you talk about. Keep going ^_^
