Isn’t that like, really bad karma?

As we were closing the store tonight someone found an empty box that used to hold a set of Tarot cards.  Would you want a reading done on stolen cards?

Sometimes people suck.  I’m going to add the dude who keeps stealing our dvd sets to that list too.

Must go now.  I’ve been sleep deprived for two days now due to an unhealthy Battlestar Galactica obsession and I’m literally listing sideways in my chair right now.

Bed.  Sleep.  Good.

Blog guilt and random linkage

Well, I’ve obviously been ignoring my poor little blog for the past week!  Between obsessing over season two of Battlestar Galactica, catching up on the new episodes of my shows (wow, all four of them) and not wanting to post anything while I was in a grumpy mood (thanks, TTC!) I haven’t been much in the mood to write.  There were a couple of topics I was going to write about, but they would have been long posts and I never seemed to set aside enough time for them.  Obviously writing them in pieces would have worked, but that’s entirely too logical for me.

I’ve also been doing some surfing in the best bright shiny object tradition.  Since I’ve been varying my surfing in the past week I also realized I need to get anal about organizing my bookmarks, which is kind of sad, yet also satisfying.  It’s funny – at work my bookmark folders have names like Medical Associations, Bookstores, Ready Reference and Supplies and at home they’re all Manga, Comics, Anime, Online Cartoons… heh.  My links on the right seem to be official type sites for the most part, though I’m not sure how that happened.  No library stuff, but only because the library blogs I read are all subscribed to via my Bloglines account.  Also, since they’re about library stuff I can read them at work and it’s like professional development.  :P

So, for no reason what-so-ever, here are some of the topics from my Google toolbar that I searched for over the past week:

Chococat – despite what they say on the website, I don’t think there’s much point to Chococat.  It’s not based on a tv show or anything else as far as I can tell.  He’s just a vaguely stunned looking cat they put on stuff to sell it.  And that completely works for me.  I’m such a Chococat ho, it’s amazing.  I fortunately do retain some sense when presented with Chococat merch.  I haven’t bought the shower curtain yet, even though I really really want it.  I realize that since I don’t actually have a shower requiring a curtain it would be a waste of money.  It’s really cute though… I haven’t gone trolling for new Chococat stuff lately, which is kind of sad.  (Read his review of Josie and the Pussycats here)

Smallville spoilers – via KryptonSite.  Someone was going to die on Smallville and I wanted to find out who without actually having to watch the episode.  It ended up NOT being Lana, so I don’t have to worry about watching Smallville anymore after all.  I liked season one, meh’d my way through season two, didn’t watch most of season three then found out later it kicked ass and wasn’t able to catch up on all the eps I missed, started on season four because I thought I’d learned a valuable lesson, which turned out to be that season four sucked too.  I haven’t even bothered this year.  I’m sticking with Veronica Mars and Supernatural, thanks.

“Dakota Fanning” and Coraline – this is when I found out that Coraline was going to be an animated movie.  I don’t know why I didn’t know that before, or why it didn’t occur to me.  I mean, buttons for eyes would be hard to do in a live action flick.  Though after watching Mirrormask I could see how they might do it.

Spacecast Toronto – it’s really just Space, but the URL is spacecast which explains my constant confusion.  Last Sunday I actually turned on the tv every hour to see if Battlestar Galactica was coming on and realized to my horror that I missed over half the episode when I checked at 6:40 almost at random.  I was sure it couldn’t have been on that early.  It didn’t even occur to me to check online to see when it was airing, despite having looked the show up before.  Even linking to it in an earlier blog post.  Way to go, Cathy!

Bones tv show – to see what I’ve caught and what I’ve missed.  They’ve actually aired more episodes than I thought they had, and I was surprised to find out that I’ve seen most of them already.  Oddly, there were two episodes that I blurred together in my head and thought were the same one.  I’m still mostly boycotting Fox over the whole Firefly thing (you bastards!) so while I wanted to watch Bones, I also have no plans to get attached.  Fox will just take it away from me then.  Yes, it’s all about me.

Cup o’ Noodles – which I guess are just Cup Noodles now.  That’s sad.  The o’ was really fun to say.  I was actually kind of hoping for some sort of store locator here, since I haven’t seen them in a grocery store in years.  They’re out there somewhere, just apparently nowhere I shop.  And of all the ramen noodles available, they kick ass the most.  Some of the flavours they have now seem kind of wrong tho.  I like the shrimp kind, but I have to pick out the little dried shrimps.  (they make tasty cat treats, btw)  Also, it seems you can buy Cup [o'] Noodles in the gourmet food section of Amazon.  Weird.  Sad but true: in the Spiderman movie, I got a little thrill when he swung by the Cup o’ Noodles ad.

Tomorrow I’m going to read this and regret posting when I’m overtired.  heh.

Public Service Announcement:  If you feel the need to go see Underworld: Evolution, be sure to rewatch the first movie beforehand since movie 2 takes place about five minutes after Underworld ends.  You might be slightly less confused while watching.  Also, be prepared for excessive cheese and the longest slow motion sex scene I’ve ever seen in a movie.

Just a wee update

I was sad yesterday – I spent a bunch of time updating my coming soon page and Word Press ate my changes.  Or my internet connection did.  Either way, I guess I should have been saving as I went along.  Oh well.  I was too tired to try to fix it then so went to veg in front of Lost instead.  But it was boring so I ended up switching between it and Bones.  I really should have picked Bones, but I felt obliged to watch Lost so ended up being confused about both of them.  At least David Boreanaz looked good.  Very relaxed and happy, which is so not how I was used to seeing him on Angel.

Yesterday was also manga day!  I went at lunch and picked up Tramps Like Us 8 and Crossroad 2. Then I went back after work and got Tenshi Na Jai 2, Sequence (which is a standalone), Saiyuki 9 and Saiyuki Reload 1.  I have to go back on Friday for Kizuna, Pretty Maniacs and…. something else…

That’s it until I have more time and my brain reboots.

Update: I got Pretty Maniacs 2, Kizuna 5 and Oh My Goddess 21.  Also went and picked up my comics, which is twice in one month.  Wow!  And double wow!  The new issue of Robin didn’t completely suck!

How cool is this?

I found out BBC is doing a live action adaptation of Terry Pratchett’s Johnny and the Bomb.  I love his Johnny Maxwell books!  I hope they’ll release the dvd over here as well.

new stuff, delayed stuff

Eh.  Not much came in today.  The only new thing that came in that I picked up was Land of the Blindfolded 6.  Yeah, it’s on my list as being released next week.  I’m soooo going to be able to trust this info!  lol.  Also bought Saiyuki 6 and 7 since I won’t be able to borrow any more of the series.  Only two more in this part, then I guess it’s on to Saiyuki Reload.  I’m going to send out a mixed thank you/curse you to the friend who gave me this for Christmas.  I really didn’t think it was going to be this addictive!

Ah well.  I’m going to try to borrow more volumes to keep trying out some new stuff.  On my “list” is Dramacon (the only original-English title I’ve read so far is off*beat, which was pretty good), Othello 5 and 6 and a bunch of other titles that I can’t remember right now.  It’s been a long day.

Volume 1 of Penny Arcade was there, too.  I didn’t get a chance to look at it, but I did mention it at job #2, so hopefully we’ll try to get it there as well.  I’ve heard a lot of good things about Penny Arcade, but would I need to know gaming stuff to get it?  Probably.  I guess I’ll take a better look next time I’m at the comic shop.

I also learned today that the Canadian release of the new Dr. Who season 1 dvd set is going to be delayed until March 7.  (update: it’s back to February 14. make up your minds!!)  I’m not a huge fan of the show myself (I kept missing it when it was on and eventually gave up trying) but I know we’re going to get a lot of questions about it at the store.  I plan on renting the dvd’s when they’re finally out.

Some guy came into the store tonight and asked if we had season 2 of Battlestar Galactica on dvd.  I told him it hadn’t been released in Canada yet since we just started airing it and he just stared at me.  I really don’t know what that was about.  heh.  I very helpfully suggested that he order it online from the States and he continued to stare.  I stared back pleasantly and eventually he wandered away…

Waaaaalllllllllt!!!!!!

How could they have sent Michael off into the jungle after his boy without once doing the primal scream?  The other Lostaways could have tracked him by the faint, far off waaaaallllllts.

Kidding!  (sort of)

Pretty pretty Aquaman

Apparently there’s already a website devoted to the new WB pilot of Aquaman (although I understand that probably won’t be the title of the show).  They have a quote that I read earlier tonight in Entertainment Weekly:

Toale … will play twentysomething Florida dive shop owner A.C. (that’s Arthur Curry for the Aquaman-lore impaired.)

Um, not to be negative about the show before it starts or anything, but A.C.??  Dive shop owner??  Isn’t he the King of Atlantis?  Is this some sort of clever ruse to help him learn about the surface dwellers?

Actually the first thing I thought of when I read this was a scene in the last incarnation of the Teen Titans where Arsenal was trying to convince the original team to come back.  They were all arguing about how they’d get the funding for a new Tower and finally Tempest just gets up, walks out and then returns with a huge chest of sunken treasure.  heh.  Aquaman totally wouldn’t have to get a day job.

Eh, I’ll watch it if it makes it onto tv.  I mock, but I know little enough about Aquaman that they could do almost anything and I won’t get all freakishly fangirly about it.

They should have made it a bait shop, tho…

Weekly manga roundup

I waited until the end of the week for this one since I kind of spread my buying out over a few days.  Here are my new additions:

Doubt!! 6 (series is now complete)
The Wallflower 6
Fake 7 (also the last of the series)
Here is Greenwood 8
Ultra Cute 1
Descendents of Darkness 9
Dazzle 1
Sengoku Nights 1

The last two were recommended by my comic store friend as the ones she liked the most of the latest batch of new releases.  I had forgotten that I was planning on picking up Sengoku Nights so I was glad of the reminder.  I haven’t read it yet, and I’ve only read the first part of Dazzle so I can’t comment on either yet.

Ultra Cute: I picked this up since I read a preview of it on the Tokyopop site (marking one of the very few times I’ve actually clicked to go to the website from their “newsletter”) and thought it looked… well, cute!  A brief breakdown of the plot is that Ami and Noa have been romantic rivals for years – they usually both fall for the same guy then scare him away with their crazy competitiveness.  The cycle is broken when they crash a karaoke party and end up (for once!) falling for different guys.  Unfortunately Ami finds out that the guys are both jerks who are just playing with the girls and vows “revenge” while trying to protect Noa from her new boyfriend. It was pretty entertaining.  The only real problem I had with the book was Ami’s “This guy’s so mean! He’s such a jerk!  But I still really love him!”  attitude.  Oi.  I almost got a headache from how hard my eyes rolled…   Of course the two guys aren’t quite as shallow as they seem, so I’ll keep reading to find out what their deal is and what happens next.  Toss me a hint of a tragic past and I’ll wait to find out what it is, lol.

Here is Greenwood: I was really thrown by the last volume and the introduction of waaayyyy too many new characters.  All the seniors left and a whole new batch of identical looking freshmen arrived to take their place.  Well, the exchange student stands out, but that’s it.  This volume has another sports festival and Kazuya is finally persuaded to join the track team.  He has an ulterior motive though – will it work?  This volume also includes two “alternate universe” type stories.

Doubt!! – This is a series I stuck with because I knew it would be short.  I’ve heard a lot of people say it’s a shallow series, and it is, but I was okay with that since the characters seemed to actually know that they were shallow.  Ai’s goals were to be pretty and get a handsome boyfriend.  That was pretty much the focus of the series with the addition of a new ex-girlfriend of So’s showing up every once in a while to make Ai feel inferior and to renew her determination to keep So.  Honestly?  I kept waiting for her to hook up with Yuichiro.  I wanted her to!  The nice best friend never gets the girl… That said, the last volume seemed a bit different than the rest, and Ai finally started to stand up for herself (I was going to say that she gained some depth as well, but honestly, she still had to be pushed into things right up until the end).  Even So seemed like less of a jerk by the end of the series.  lol.  So yes, I found it shallow but entertaining.

I’m sure there’s a manga series out there where the heroine throws over the gorgeous yet troubled guy in favour of the devoted but only cute best friend, but I haven’t come across any yet…
